My first date with a PC was in October 2006. We were alone, locked inside a school computer lab. The lab door had been locked from the outside by the lab technician. We had agreed that he was to open it later during the day, after I had finished my romantic encounter. He was concerned about the security of the other 30 computers in that laboratory.
My goal was to learn about the PC , while the boarding school students were away during that school term. I was embarrassed that at 22, as a science teacher, I did not not know how to start up Windows. I had only two weeks to learn as much as I could.
To lighten up the romantic atmosphere, I played a series of video tutorials : Professor teaches Word 2000 and Professor teaches Excel 2000 on a Windows 98 PC. Three months later , I celebrated successfully creating a yahoo account and composing my first ever e-mail to the Japanese embassy.
I had fallen in love with PC.
After several more dates, I proposed.
To show my commitment, I decided to pursue a bachelor degree in Computer Science so that I could understand the magic behind the PC.
'C' was my first programming language. I was introduced to VB.Net in my second semsterat college but I didn't clearly understand the OOP concepts.I switched the platform for my second year project from VB.net to PHP. Learning C++ in my fourth year was a steep journey since I still lacked the basic OOP principles. I once tried the book "Learn C++ in 21 days". My efforts were thwarted before I could reach the topics on arrays. Bjarne Stroustrup big C++ textbook was intimidating and not alleviating my situation at all.
Then came Java to my rescue. The book that made the trick was "Learn Java in a weekend". Java created the foundation for OOP for me ,and armed with this knowledge, I used it to learn C# and then did dive further into VB .Net .
Nine years have passed since my first date and I am still happily married to PC. Though everyday, I fight the seduction posed by the sexy and slim Mac Book Air. Sometimes PC turns blue when she is angry, but I have learned to live with that.
